The 411 on BLUE PLATE

David Lesniak (from New York) and David Muniz - AKA OD, or Other David - (from Mississippi) started baking for fun when they moved to the UK from America in 2005. After baking for friends they set up a small cake stall at Richmond Farmer's Market, their popularity grew and the Outsider Tart boys became known for creating some of the most delicious and decadent cakes in London, as well as being the very first to introduce the now-ubiquitous Whoopie Pie to our shores.

Whilst their cheesecakes and brownies have won them legions of fans, it is the home-style chilis served with traditional sweet cornbread that Chiswick residents have been queuing round the block for on Thursday evenings. The informal affairs where locals could pop in and pick up a box of chili, or dine in around the striped counter, became so popular that the two Davids decided to expand the range of food from back home that they offer in their corner of London.

What's cookin'

Blue Plate serves up good old-fashioned comfort food from across the US - from the soul food of the Deep South, through Cali-cuisine of the West Coast, and the eclectic, feisty influences of New York. The Davids' authentic menu features a range of seasonally changing chilis, soups, salads, and sandwiches, plus specialty dishes including Southwest Brisket Hash, Carolina ‘Slaw and Pickled Grapes and breakfast treats such as Buttermilk Pancakes, Scrapple - an Amish dish of pan-seared pork and polenta loaf, poached eggs, tomatillo salsa (okay, maybe not so Amish after all) - and homemade bagels.

Chili and Meatloaf Nights

Expanding on the popularity of the Chili Night, Fridays are Meatloaf Night, and the Davids serve up their version (which as the chilis, changes frequently, and may be a three meat version, chicken, turkey, or vegetable) in a US size portion accompanied by buttermilk mashed potatoes with spicy mushroom gravy, peas and carrots, which again can be eaten in the restaurant or taken away.

Saturday nights at Blue Plate are a culinary adventure around the US. Taking each of the 50 States in turn, every Saturday night of the year will feature an exclusive menu of local grub from each of the diverse States - be it Gumbo from Louisiana, Slow-cooked Brisket from Texas or a Clambake from Massachusetts.

The first State Night is on Saturday 22nd June, where guests can expect the soul food of Alabama...

The all day Munch menu is served Monday - Friday from 8am to 6pm, and features small dishes such as the Coffee Cart Special - a NYC treat of pan-fried cornbread and homemade strawberry jam for those who need a quick pick me up in the morning, as well as more indulgent dishes like Mamma's French Toast, made with lemon bread, fresh berries and whipped cream. Savoury dishes include Chili Eggs, Spoonbread (like Shepherd's Pie, but Southern style and spicy), and the Famous Pulled Pork Sandwich - slow roast pork slathered with their signature BBQ sauce.

Served all day on Saturdays and Sundays, the Brunch menu at Blue Plate is full of decadent US classics covering all the bases of America's edible culture. Dishes include Grits and Eggs, turkey and sweet potato Hash, the One-Eyed Monster (fried egg, OD's ranchero sauce and cheese on johnnycakes; also available "well-hung" or, err... bigger), Goy Vey! (Bourbon molasses ham, noodle pudding and red-eye gravy) and Cluck and Pluck - slow roasted chicken with OD's mango peach BBQ sauce. All the regular bakery treats are available throughout the week and at weekends, including a range of pastries, muffins, granolas and American breakfast cereals.

Another true touch of Americana comes in the form of the chairs - made from recycled Coke bottles in classic Coca Cola red- and the recycled corrugated Barn Star lights shipped directly from an Amish community in the States.

And so to drink

The drinks menu is an exclusively American offering, with wines from estates in California, New York, Oregon, New Hampshire, and Virginia, and craft beers from breweries in Delaware, Wisconsin, Seattle, Oregon and New Hampshire.

In June and July David and David, along with wine partners Wine Equals Friends, will host two exclusive wine pairing dinners at Blue Plate, with American wines paired to each course. On Friday 7th June A New York State of Wine will celebrate the food and wine of New York State, with dishes such as Soused Shrimp, Red Snapper Hash, and Duck Meatloaf featuring on the menu, and on Friday 26th July The Davids will present a bespoke menu from the State of Virginia. Tickets are available via the website and direct from the bakery.

David Muniz said: "For the past three years people have sat around our kitchen island at Outsider Tart eating cakes and pastries; now they can come into our living room, relax and enjoy the comforts of home away from home.  More of a food joint than a restaurant, we want people to come in and fill their belly while having a good old chin wag in a friendly local haunt."

David Lesniak said: "This has really been a labour of love for us. Just like when we set out with the baking, it was because we missed what was good about back home that we hadn't been able to find here. Blue Plate is all about comfort foods from America, and we spent a long time researching - and sampling - dishes we think best represent the soul of the American kitchen that we want to share with our friends in the UK. It's been a very personal journey, and we're really excited about sharing the fruits of it with everyone."
